Dissapointed
December 8, 2006
I’m so so so dissapointed. All our hard work, and Genting wins. I wonder what Singapore has received in return… cheaper water? Southern islands? I would have been ok if Kerzner won. Oh wells, life goes on. It was a great roller coaster ride, but for Sentosa, the ride stops here.
To the Eighth Wonder team, it was a fantastic experience.

U mean the Fantasy thingy is not gonna happen?? So wat will the Sentosa IR gonna look like?? I really like the Eight Wonder concept, but like u said, life goes on. I hope we have something decent.

I was hoping for Eighth Wonder too. The pictures are so amazing! In comparison with Genting, theirs’ doesn’t seem like nothing we don’t already have ‘cept for the casino.
But someone points out that maybe Genting didn’t propose things that were over the top. Things that appeal or affordable to mass market.
We can built the best of anything but if no one can afford to visit these high class resorts, it’ll be a flop. Just a thought…

oh man.. I thought Eighth Wonder Dream Team did an excellent job, sadly they cant carry out their ideas
It was definitely once in a life-time opportunity to be able to get up close with the Dream Team that day. I’m glad i was given the opportunity… Thanks to you too
Hope they can find another chance to carry out their ideas and realise those dreams.. Cheers for Mark Advent and his team!

Chole i think you got it wrong. The Genting Universal is a gated theme park where as the 8th Wonder one is free entry all areas. So how can one not afford free?

Kuen: it was a shock to all…the Government has just given the crown jewel of Singapore to the malaysians. some say there was a political agenda behind it all. it’s going to look like another genting highlands.Tragic.
chloe:True, but the over the top designs were probably something that singapore needs. Here is singapore trying to stay cutting edge, and yet the government falls on a safe bet. And although kerzner and eighth wonder’s designs ma have been over the top, it still opened its arms to all income brackets, it wasn’t just for the high rollers. free shows and attractions, non gated. it’s such a shame…… why singapore… why….
Gina: I’m so happy you got to go for breakfast, i apologise if i wasn’t able to be there with you eating the yummy pancakes, sausages, and hashbrowns, i had a press con right after that upstairs! Well, at least you have a poster to remember it all.
waynep: hey love… ddn’t see your comment until now… why are you up at 4.32am! i thought you went to bed already hehehehhe… but you are right, they did provide alot of free attractions, it wasn’t all premium attractions.

im so disappointed too, i was working with capitaland and kerzner on their IR bids- their PR company hired us to cover all their press releases and what nots and i was so rooting for them. 8th wonder came a close second. i thought their over the top designs & fantastical themes were just what sg needed to out ourselves on the map..oh well…

maybe they’re thinking to have a third IR. just for keeps.
pom pom pom.

Charme: oh ya? had no idea… yeah if kerzner won, i would still have been ok with it. but GENTING! omg…arghhh
sarip: doubt it. 2 is enough for a tin island like singapore. nevermind…. i’m sure harry’s island will live on… SOMEWHERE else…..

Genting’s model was the most logical choice. It’s going to be great for singapore with universal studios and it also means with the Genting IR here, they won’t be building a competing one in JB. Tourism’s gonna boom. 8th wonder is a beautiful concept, but if you serious think about it, would it generate the numbers like the IR Genting? It was just a matter of crunching the numbers.

Jamie: well, lets hope that genting at sentosa doesnt pull in the same crap crowd genting highland pulls in, we all know how sleaze that place has become.
and universal? well… its just a a copy and paste thing. singapore is going for a safe done-it-before option. So my take on that is, yes there’s universal, but its not unique enough. Everyone hoped that singapore would have taken the plunge and took a risk to create an iconic destination. We’ll just have to live with another sunway lagoonish genting highlands.
tourism would have boomed no matter which bidder won. i just see genting pulling regional tourism…

Come on, I am sure that you do not mean that the people who worked for Genting did not put in an equivalent amount of work, eh? Sure, Genting Highlands pulls in crap people, but the same group runs casinos in other countries which are pretty decent too. Look beyond political relations, eh? http://sgentrepreneurs.com/news-stop/2006/12/08/genting-wins-sentosa-ir-bid/

You see, in the end it’s a matter of what target audience the government wants. At this point, it’s the Chinese and Indian tourists they want. Based on STB survey, Genting concept is what appeals to these tourist.
The government is not building these IRs for Sporeans, it’s for tourists. Seriously, how would Sg’s 4 millions plus population support these IRs. Universal is boring for us but not for the targeted audiences.
But there’s still hope for a 3rd IR, just no so soon. SM Lee did mention that Sg is capabable of more than 2 IRs. Hopefully then, we’ll get a classy IR.

Well, I think it wouldn’t be a smart move to build an IR in singapore because it would cater to such a large scale of tourism focusing on markets in the west and europe who are willing to spend that kind of money on a ‘lifestyle’ as opposed to just plain downright’ gambling for function. Singapore has progressed too fast for its age, hence the possible reasoning for wanting to being localized entrepreneurs on the front via tried and tested methodology.
Besides, the whole casino was meant to be a downplayed, boring, asian thang innit? - not a ritzy world attraction. Singapore’s always been a ’safe’ country that would never risk creative foreign steps towards unexplored territory. It’s not supposed to be a fun place. Its supposed to ward off local Singaporeans and attract the rich hongkong and macau gambling markets with too much money and time on their hands.
But it was great to see the creative potential of what Singapore might just never be ready for. Shows that there is creativity in Singapore, just that society isn’t ready for too much ‘out of the box’ - what more with something that didn’t come with constraints of a box…

No matter who builds it, Sentosa is going to be no longer an island of nature.

As a friend said:”you go north its malaysia, you go south, its still malaysia, we may as well fly the malaysian flag!”
Comment by Angela — December 13, 2006 @ 11:15 pm
Ahh, don’t be sad. Look on the bright side. Think positive!
Anyway, if you don’t wana go north/south, try east/west?

We were just discussing about it among my friends and everyone agree on the political thing. Imagine Genting didn’t get it! We might not get water!
