Big Ben’s Pies

April 16, 2007

A month ago after our weekly MTB fix, Wayne and i were deciding where we should eat lunch. We were on siglap road when he remembered someone telling him about a Pie shop down the road at Opera Estate.

I do remember watching a programme on TV about this place, apparently serving the most authentic British Pies in Singapore. What was it called…. Britain Pies, London bridge Pies, London Pies, English Pies, Queen Pies, ….. BIG BEN’S PLACE! (At this moment, Great Britannica is playing in my head…)

i won’t say its mind blowing, but it’s quite close to how british pies and cornish pasties should look and taste. Unlike those puff pastry sorts, english pies are dough-based and dense.

For HIM: Steak & Mushroom - Diced beef with fresh button mushrooms.

For HER: Chicken & Mushroom - Diced chicken fillet with fresh button mushrooms in cream sauce.

Here’s their address if you’d like to visit Big Ben’s Place:

15 SWAN LAKE AVE
OPERA ESTATE
SINGAPORE 455711
TEL/FAX: 6876 0737

what i find ironic is the ALL TIME PROMOTION at this establishment.

“15% OFF on all regular pies!!!
For all American Express Cardholders!!!”

  4. alanis: it’s an all english restaurant, and the promotion is for american express.

Great deal for an american cc company, wouldn’t have had a second look if it said HSBC or standard chartered which are english banks with a presence here.

  7. ahahahaha!!! amex kard!! that is so friggin funny!! man this made me laugh. intelligent humour. ur english side showing man!! strangely it reminds me of a good fren who is an asthmatic chain smoker. he used to “relak one korner” at sum kopitiam with his pack of malboros most subtly placed next to his ventolin inhaler & alternate between the 2. hahaha!!

speaking of irony… they screened “becoming jane” (story of jane austen) here in perth. 18th century england. quite a stylo film. have u seen it?! some of my ah lian & minah rock frens didnt like it… but i reckon u wud. anyways have a good one lady angela!! cheers!!
