Bromhidrosis

June 15th, 2007

The office is getting wired as I type, but that’s not what I wanted to blog about. It’s about my nose and low tolerance to smells. I know this may come across mean, but I think it’s a questionable topic.

Two of the workers doing the installations in the office really stink! It’s not a sweaty or food centre smell. It’s full on body odour. It’s so bad, when he was in my corner of the office, I actually felt giddy and sick (nauseous kind of sick). It was so consuming, I had to move to another desk down the hall to continue my work.

Now this is what I don’t get…

Can’t these people smell themselves?

When I go out mountain biking, there are days when I can smell my stink, and so I roll on some deodorant temporarily or run for the showers!

Bromhidrosis or body odour (also called bromidrosis, osmidrosis and ozochrotia) is the smell of bacteria growing on the body. These bacteria multiply considerably in the presence of sweat, but sweat itself is almost totally odourless. Body odour is associated with the hair, feet, groin (upper medial thigh), anus, skin in general, armpits, genitals, pubic hair, and mouth. Body odour is specific to the individual, and can be used to identify people, though this is more often done by dogs than by humans. An individual’s body odour is also influenced by diet, gender, genetics, health, medication, and mood.courtesy of wikipedia

The smellier of the two is working on a ladder, trunking the wires to the ceilings, which means his arms, are raised up most of the time. Now surely you can smell it in that position! Are people just oblivious to their own body odour? are they accustomed to their own smell? I really want to know….

I can’t work like this…. REALLY!?

oh gawd, what a horror. i am super sensitive to smells and i wld’ve been gagging if i were in close proximity to stink.

but then again, when i was in sec sch, my mum used to complain abt odour but i could never smell it. now, if i walk past a bunch of kids in their sweat-soaked sch uniforms, i cannot help but catch a whiff of their adolescent pong!

since you’re on a laptop, take it off the desk and work from the opp side of the room? or ask your doc to remove your olfactory glands altogether. the former is the easier option but really, the latter is sure to do the trick.

hmmm why not show them cartoons during their break of Pepé Le Pew happily hopping around and people fainting, plants wilting, paint falling off walls etc. then give them significant looks. *fingers crossed* (doesn’t help that being indoors and having air conditioning makes BO 2000 gajillion times worse. for your sake i hope they aren’t working right in front of an air vent!)

and if all else fails, there’s always desks down the hall, air freshener spray or vicks =)

You know there’s this episode from Seinfeld where he lend his car to a friend with strong BO who eventually stained his car permanently with his pungent BO. He eventually changed his car.

I hope these workers doesn’t stained your workplace!
