Our first Adventure Race

July 26, 2007

There was always something about adventure racing that appealled to me. Maybe its because i’ve always loved the outdoors, rolling in mud, climbing trees, camping and obstacle courses. So Adventure racing is right up my alley! Wayne doesn’t mind doing it as long as there’s a mountain biking leg.

So.. we’re finally doing it, no turning back now. This weekend, we’re taking part in the KOTRT Penang Eco-Challenge. As far as i know, there’s going to be a rope section, water challenge, Trail running and mountain biking.

Who’s teaming up?
Team SLACKERS
- Ming
- Winnie
- Angela

Team SMURFS
- Nik
- Pei Ling
- Wayne

TEAM ???
- Ling
- Teck Whee

We figured its better we paired up with experienced racers for the first one, so it works out well. To prepare ourselves for this weekend, we did some training at the hilly NUS campus last night IN FULL GEAR!

Basic gear consists of:
- Harness
- Carabiners x2
- Ropes x2
- Figure of 8
- Waterbag
- Helmut

We also needed a good pair of trail shoes for running. Trail running isn’t like normal running, and having a proper shoe is essential to keeping your knees intact.

Trail running usually takes place on hiking trails, like Bukit Timah Nature Reserve or Kent Ridge Park. Terrain is usually rutty, single track, narrow, slippery with climbs and drops. All require a bit of scrambling, therefore you need a shoe which is nobbier, more rigid and a generally more protective.

Wayne and I got the Running Adizero XT Light Trail Runner
“Designed for neutral runners and supinators who want a lightweight trail shoe that’s perfect for racing. The adiZero XT features an adiPRENE insert for comfort and shock absorption, and a lightweight, breathable upper.”

My shoe is the blue and grey one. Swweeeet!

Wish us luck!

Saturday: Pre-race set up

July 24, 2007

We spent the whole of Saturday preparing for the race on Sunday, from trail markings to tentages and evacuation signs.

We split up into teams to cover the whole trail, because it’s just alot of work! Logistics planning actually takes place a month before race day, hopefully participants and supporters appreciate the amont of work that goes into organising a race.

For the kiddy’s race, we actually marked out a route in the shape of the Adidas Logo! And trust me, it ain’t easy…but we tried.

Race update on next post.

Sneaky Sound System

July 8, 2007

Definately one of the best things that has come out of Australia aside from Penfolds, Kylie and Tim Tams. Wayne and i were vegging in front of the TV, watching the awesome performances on Live Earth and this group got us jumping out of the bed, and on to google to find out more.

Listen to their songs on their website HERE. There are links on their website to buy the album if you digg their tunes.

Hmmm… i think it’s time i put up my radio.blog again!

Wayne P Reports: Transformers

July 2, 2007

Ever since I was young my favourite toys had to be the Transformers. It combined 2 things which I loved very much as a kid – and still do, fast cars and cartoon. So, when I heard that they were making a movie about it a year ago I waited in baited breath for its release.

From what I read in forums and fan sites, the storyline of the movie would be nothing like The Transformers: The Movie cartoon, which is to this day the best animation/cartoon I have ever seen or has really made me cry. I guess being a very impressionable 8 year old at the time in 1986; it was something totally unlike the happy-feel good sentiment of the cartoon series - in which good triumphed over evil. The cartoon movie took on a very dark and sinister tone with a very sad but much needed climax to bring forth a new generation of transformers.

Anyway, there was some apprehension towards this movie as I have seen many a CG disaster (read: Spiderman 3 and Star Wars Episode III) and I was expecting no less since there was no avoiding it. To my relief it was not, in fact the CG was an inch short of amazing and the movie almost matching my expectations after the cartoon.

The Storyline
Basically there has been civil unrest in Cybertron between the Autobots and Decepticons. Megatron the Decepticon leader has been searching for the Allspark, which is said to possess infinite power, to help him take over Cybertron and haverst use Earth to harvest it for its energy. Sam Witwicky buys a car which turns out to be Bumble Bee – not the Volkswagen Beatle but a Chevy Camero – and helps the Optimus Prime gain control of the Allspark – for you Transformer buffs its called The Matrix in the cartoon – and the fighting takes you from Qatar to the Hoover Dam to L.A.

The Crunch
The CG is amazing with the robots looking really like they actually did exist in the flesh. No cartoony looking feel to it as the shadows, shapes and transformations from their alter egos. You really do feel an attachment to these robots, very similar to how you could identify with the ones in the cartoons and they do evoke the same sort of feelings which I thought epitomized an Autobot.

The storyline was simple and yet it did not meander away too much from the original storyline though some of the vehicles have been upgraded to their American counter parts and the introduction of newer Decepticons. There was action from start to finish and Megan Fox was beautiful eye candy throughout the show. The film was well directed and the action sequences were fluid and fast moving, bringing you from one scene to another. The sound track too is something that I will definitely have to get with Linkin Park and the Smashing Pumpkins performing.

This show is a must see and if you have love the Transformers cartoons get yourself some Gold Class tickets. It was a really good movie that I enjoyed tremendously and brought back so many good memories of me racing through my mom’s garden fighting off Decepticon intrusions!
