Snaaake Snaaaaake!

August 30, 2007

I got the emoticon from someone on msn, but it was only until 2 weeks ago i was told where it had came from. This has to be one of the most random, useless but funniest things i’ve seen online! Yes, i’ve got a weird sense of humour.

It’s hip to be square

August 30, 2007

Went to Novena Velocity yesterday to redeem my North Face voucher i won from the Battle@Bukit Timah MTB race. Since we were at Novena, we tried looking for the posters in Novena Square 2. I knew about the huge one on one side of the building, i took a picture with my camera phone about a month ago. Wish they didn’t have that window just by my nose… looks like i’ve got a moustache!

We both bought an ice-cream, and strolled the desserted lanes of Square 2, and low and behold, my vandalized face on the wall.

Luckily i found a few more around the corner which were untouched.

Mountain Biking - 26 August 2007

August 27, 2007

Spent my Saturday and Sunday morning at Bukit Timah Mountain Bike trail with Wayne. It wasn’t an ambitious ride, just as well because i forgot to bring my speedometer. Mr Butterfly seems to like SixSixOnes.

I tried out Wayne’s Turner RFX on both days, and i was truly surprised! That beast of a thing is actually pretty fun and easy to ride.

Anyway, my sister keeps complaining i’m writting too many biking related stories.

For you jie jie, some fluffy ones coming right up! :D

ICON Run 2

August 22, 2007

This week we managed to pull Adel and Marlene along with us for a lunch run throug the same Marina Park loop. I think its going to be a weekly wednesday thing from now on.

Today was one of those days when i felt pretty ok running, only thing bugging me was the knee…usual ITB nonsense. The only reason why i run is because it’s the easiest method to lose weight and keep fit. Come on… honestly… how many people actually LOVE running!!! I don’t buy the whole “wind blowing through my hair, appreciating nature and listening to my body” crap.

Hopefully i’ll get to see some results. Did you know, the bigger your waistline, the bigger your insurance premiums.

hmm….ok, i’ve thought about it, i’ve understand how it works…….NOW WHERE’S LUNCH!

Pre-run photo: Over enthuasiastic ICON girls all suited up

Post-run photo: Exhausted us

Irene Margaret Gray (aka Aggie)

August 16, 2007

“In God’s designs there is no haste,
no rest, no weariness, no discontinuity;
all things are done by HIM in the majesty
of silence, and they are seen under a light
that shineth quietly in the darkness.”
- Archdeacon Farrar-

Her service was held on the 14th of August at the St. Milburga’s Church, Stoke St Milborough. Everything was all according to her requests, from the service proceedings, hymns, musical pieces, poems to how she’d like to be laid to rest. I wish i saw her one last time, but i know she was watching down on me and keeping me safe during the Penang Eco Challenge that weekend. I had a guardian angel, and i know it was her.

After most of the family had visited her, Lucy, my cousin, told her “You’ve seen everyone now Aggie, if you need to go, you can go now”. Shortly after, on that afternoon… she passed.

I used to write her alot of handwritten letters when i was younger, and i always remember her ending letters with lots of kisses XOXO….i don’t know why i stopped. One day, i decided to write to her again, but she left before she could read it. But it’s ok, i’m sure she heard me… because i found out she passed later on that SAME day…

Aggie lived a fulfilling life, surrounded by people who loved her. She now rests peacefully near the front of the church overlooking her Cottage just down the road.

I’ll end this post with a poem she chose, which happens to be my favourite too. To my grandmother, and guardian angel, we will miss you Aggie! XOXO

Song
When I am dead, my dearest,
Sing no sad songs for me;
Plant thou no roses at my head,
Nor shady cypress tree:
Be the green grass above me
With showers and dewdrops wet;
And if thou wilt, remember,
And if thou wilt, forget.

I shall not see the shadows,
I shall not feel the rain;
I shall not hear the nightingale
Sing on, as if in pain:
And dreaming through the twilight
That doth not rise nor set,
Haply I may remember,
And haply may forget

Our first ICON run

August 16, 2007

Okay, so we’ve been talking about it for months now, and we haven’t got our act together until today….MMmm… well also because we were super motivated by the previous night’s Gwen Stefani concert, i shall talk about that later.

We got changed, and unintentionally, Janice and i were looking like a Corporate run team! wearing a similar get up of a White Adidas top, running shorts, Adidas shoes and white earphones for our ipods.

We ran to Marina Park for a good 40mins loop, now it’s a matter of getting the rest of the office running too!

It’s been awhile since i last went jogging so it was great to get the legs working… (Also coz i want Gwen Stefani’s hot ass body!)

my fav fries!

Coming close in second place would be mcdonalds’ fries. Really dislike those fat ones, or the worse… wedges! Bring on the shoestrings!

Just Google it

August 10, 2007

So i’ve been receiving spam email from a “Nick .” recently, and it’s all on Singapore politics, with recent articles on Chee Soon Juan/Chee Siok Chin (i had to google them, coz seriously, i ain’t interested in politics!). So i replied one of the emails and informed him to remove me from his mailing list immediately.

And this is the reply i get “Any particular reason? Are you a PAP supporter?”

OMG…seriously…does it matter? I’m not even a citizen! Don’t need to waste time on me… i don’t even vote! Someone really has his knickers in a twist! When i want to be off someone’s mailing list, i don’t want to be emailed anymore, so i again told him to stop spamming me or i’ll report him.

and i get a reply YET again, telling me to be more civil on cyberspace, and the comical part was when he said this:
“p.s if you do not want me to email you anymore, don’t spam me back.”

*facepalm* Who’s spamming who… so funny!

Anyway, On a random note, a simple google search of his email spinx11[at]hotmail.com reveals that he is Nick Cordell looking for a “vespa as cheap as possible” in a expat forum. Unless… this guy isn’t Nick, and probably just got his email hijacked by someone else.

Ming’s take on Adventure Racing

August 3, 2007

Before i publish my post-race report, i think it’s important to know how Adventure Racing works… in Ming’s words. I can’t agree with it more, it’s a fantastic hypothesis. The extraction below is from his blog, if you can’t read it, please go HERE to re-direct you to his url.

Cock-ups and Lucky Breaks (Updated)
The Element of Luck in Adventure Racing

Abstract
Does Luck play a part in Adventure Race performance?

Background
Teams that are not physically strongest sometimes place well in races. How is this possible?

Adventure Racing is all about physical fitness, right? Well, not really. Shit happens out there.

When Shit happens to you, its a Cock-Up.

When Shit happens to someone else, it could be your Lucky Break.

Hypothesis
Performance of a team in an Adventure Race depends on the cumulative result of minimisation of Cock-Ups and maximisation of Lucky Breaks.

Evidence
2007 Penang Eco-Challenge
Team Slackers - 6th Position Overall

Cock-up #1 - Moseyed along, far behind lead vehicle, thinking that race will start when everyone gathers.

Lucky Break #1 - Winnie and Angela took off like a shot and pwned the muddy downhills and slick concrete slopes, scaring a few teams into cocking-up.

Lucky Break #2 - CP2, Oops, no Tyre levers! Desperate bare hands can remove tyre even faster!

Cock-up #2 - Gave in to Winnie’s request for a sit down meal. aka “Winnie Picnic”. Cock-up #3 - Gave in to Winnie’s request to backtrack to look for her specs. This turned into a Lucky Break for team W.N. Smurf! Grrr….

Lucky Break #3 - Did not give in to Winnie’s pleas to be rescued from the 2 hour Raft Torture.

Lucky Break #4 - Spotted a pod of Dolphins! Gave us renewed paddling energy! We beat Team PenUkBel to shore! Yahoooo…!!!

Cock-up #4 - Angela got nausea after bobbing at sea for 2 hours.

Cock-up #5 - Spotted Team PenUkBel who was lost and pointed them in the right direction.

Cock-up #6 - Gave bonked member of Team PenUkBel a Crank Gel, which promptly revived him.
Cock-up #7 - Frolicked in waterfall pool, waiting for Nik and Wayne, thinking that we were quitting once we hit camp.
Lucky Break #5 - Angela winning the debate with Winnie on whether to continue.. by ignoring Winnie’s pleas.
Cock-up #8 - Believing the organisers that the last biking leg was just an 8km sprint… which turned out to be a 1 hour full-out leg busting ride!
Lucky Break #6 - Ming watched a Discovery Channel program on how to husk coconuts, and Angela finished them off with her bare hands.

Too many cock-ups to get into the Top 5, but enough lucky breaks to make us the 6th and last team to complete the race before cut-off time!

Conclusion
Yes!
Lucky Breaks are what you need to do well!

For those that are contemplating their first A.R., go for it, enjoy yourselves and make sure you have good Karma during the race.

Life’s full of Cock-ups and Lucky Breaks too. The strange thing is, that the more Breaks you give, the more Lucky Breaks will come your way. Something about Karma……..

Ming
