Martin & Laura

March 30, 2008

Wayne’s colleague Martin really wanted to try frog legs tonight, so we headed down to Geylang for some Beef Horfun, Seafood San Mee, Yam basket….and frog legs.

His girlfriend Laura and I were just disgusted, I don’t care if it tastes like chicken, I ain’t trying no kermits.

Martin and Laura are from Switzerland, and since we were already in Geylang, we had to show our visitors the Lorong tours! The part of Singapore that tourists don’t really see. The girls and lady boys were out in full force tonight, it looked like a fish market!

After that, we headed to Clarke Quay for a walk about, Shisha and drinks. Don’t you think the two boys look like brothers? Same built, similar hairstyles, same outfit (t-shirt, jeans and sneakers), both wearing a gold chain, dark brown eyes. So weird.

Anyway, I’m spent…..bedtime, good night!

Gifts mean so much more…

when the person actually remembers the things you love.

Gina knew what would get me all excited, stationery!

The last time we met, she bought me this pen which she swears by. And true enough, it writes nice and the ink flows well… and I especially love the colour choice!

Just Woman

March 22, 2008

Clipped this article in February, but just didn’t get round to posting it. They pulled this photograph out of the SPH archives, was taken awhile back for a previous article on cycling.

The contest hasn’t changed her

Angela Leow Gray, a public relations associate, whose father is British and mother is Malaysian-Chinese, beat 24 other women to win the Most Gorgeous Female title.

by: Michelle Tay

Who: Angela Leow Gray, 25

What: Winner of Female magazine’s 50 Gorgeous People in December last year. The public relations associate, whose father is British and mother is Malaysian-Chinese, beat 24 other women to win the Most Gorgeous Female title.

The avid mountain biker also clinched the Ms Bebe-licious and Canon Most Photogenic Female titles. Ask what gave her an edge in the competition, and the 1.73m beauty quips cheekily: ‘Pepper spray and laxatives.’

She declines to reveal her weight, saying ‘at the end of the day, it’s how I look, not how much I weigh’.

Where else you’ve seen her: Dove’s Campaign for Real Beauty. The shower cream brand picked her to tell an inspiring story about her insecurities about her ‘big butt’.

She says of the experience: ‘It’s never easy talking about your flaws - or perceived flaws - in public. No matter how much you tell a woman she’s beautiful, there’s always something she’ll be unhappy with.

‘I think we have to learn to accept our flaws and work with them. Beauty is a function of your mindset.’

What made you join Female’s Gorgeous People?

I joined it - with some egging on by my cousin and her friend - for the pretty makeover and photoshoot that I was going to get. But really, I had no expectations whatsoever.

Besides looks, what other qualities did you have to demonstrate to be selected?

I wasn’t out there to win so I was pretty relaxed and I’m glad that everyone picked up on my confidence because what you see is what you get. I don’t take things too seriously and at the end of the day, I just want to have fun.

You can’t let lights, cameras and a crowd of a few hundred people intimidate you. If you’re put on the spot by the emcee, don’t give the standard pageant answer.

Instead, talk to them as if they were your friends. You win for being you, not for being someone else. If I wanted to be an actress, I would have joined MediaCorp.

What have you gained out of joining Female’s 50 Gorgeous People contest?

The pageant answer would be that I met a lot of new friends and I’ve gained a lot of confidence after winning the title. To be honest, I loved the sponsored prizes, which included vouchers worth over $4,000 and accommodation at the Majestic Grande in Bangkok, among others.

It was also a huge ego boost. But the carriage turns into a pumpkin by the time the next issue of the magazine is out on the newsstands.

Would you ever join a conventional beauty pageant such as Miss Singapore Universe?

I don’t think so. I’ve now come to accept myself and my body, and I don’t need a crown and a sash to validate that.

What’s the biggest misconception about you and how do you think winning this title has changed that?

That I’m not approachable. Actually, I think the pageant hasn’t changed that misconception. If anything, it has made it worse, as being titled ‘gorgeous’ makes it seem like I’m in a different league, or that I’m princessy and snobby.

But honestly, I’m still the same person I was before the contest. I still take the MRT to work and queue up for lunch.

Hot Cross Buns

March 15, 2008

So I’m keeping to my resolutions and trying to clear the backlog of drafts in my blog, here’s one since last year! Wayne’s family celebrates easter and good friday, so i decided to bake them some hot cross buns. It was my first attempt… I’m sure you can tell.

Here’s a bit of trivia on Hot Cross Buns.

In many historically Christian countries, the buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday, with the cross standing as a symbol of the crucifixion. They are believed by some to pre-date Christianity, although the first recorded use of the term “hot cross bun” is not until 1733. According to cookery writer Elizabeth David, Protestant English monarchs saw the buns as a dangerous hold over of Catholic belief in England, being baked from the dough used in making the communion wafer. Protestant England attempted to ban the sale of the buns by bakers but they were too popular, and instead Elizabeth I passed a law permitting bakeries to sell them, but only at Easter and Christmas. David provides no source for this assertion and it seems to be a myth arising from anti-Catholic bigotry.

Hot Cross Buns is also a simple song for teaching basic notes for learning various instruments. It developed out of an English street cry of bakers hawking their products.

(The “ha’” is pronounced “hay”, and refers to a half penny coin no longer in currency.)

Hot cross buns,
Hot cross buns,
one ha’ penny,
two ha’ penny,
hot cross buns.

If you have no daughters,
give them to your sons,
one ha’ penny,
two ha’ penny,
Hot Cross Buns

Should i attempt to make it again this year? hmmmm….

Turner RFX Review - WayneP Reports

March 11, 2008

Turner RFX
The Turner RFX was meant to be a do it all mountain bike which could take me on the long haul rides as well as take on big hits with its long travel. After riding it for the better half of 6 months I can finally give a proper review of the bike after being through varying types of terrain. I have riding this bike on everything from XC trails, to all mountain single tracks, to technical drops as well as a full on downhill courses local and overseas.

I Love Girls

March 7, 2008

We did alot of shopping between us last weekend, and I just felt like buying Wayne something. We were browsing through the racks at the originals store at Pacific Plaza, when I saw this fantastic t-shirt.

I ABSOLUTELY love it! It’s so cute! Especially that lipstick print on the collar!

And of course the day isn’t complete without Portia and Cassius greeting us with kisses when we got back.

Third and Fourth Muay Thai class

March 7, 2008

Tuesday and Thursday was my third and fouth Muay Thai lesson, and it’s getting tougher every session. We’re slowly getting the hang of skipping, but Wayne still looks like a school girl doing it. At least he’s got the push ups nailed, I can’t even do it right!

This is the Basic set up:
- Hand wraps
- Ankle guard
- Gloves
- Shin pads
- Shorts
- Adidas tank to match

On Tuesday we were taught two more offensives: Elbow Chop, Straight knee strike, and a few defensive moves: the shin block and redirection on jabs.

Was a bit stunned when my instructor Amy went for a jab, and I failed to block it. It wasn’t hard AT ALL, more like a tap, but I was still quite stunned. I’ve just never been hit before, so it’s all a bit weird for me.

Last night we were fine tuning our moves, and I think I pulled my left ab muscle, just above my hip bone while doing a knee block. Tried wiki-ing it, but I can’t confirm which muscle is that. Anyone care to enlighten me?

At the end of the day, girls, I think Muay thai is great if you want to get fit, lose weight, and learn some self defence moves.

i want…

March 5, 2008

Am thinking of selling my imac, because I’m so mobile nowadays, it doesn’t make sense for me to keep the imac. It was just a year ago I bought this baby. My first big purchase with my own hard earned pay.

I think i can count the number of times I used that computer! Such a shame, I wished I used it more, but I was just never home enough.

I have one interested buyer, just got to get the specs together. I emailed the ishop, but in the meantime, does anyone know how where to find it in the mac?

Muay Thai - Session 1 & 2

March 3, 2008

Had our first two Muay Thai lessons last week, and my body is screaming in pain. Wayne wanted incorporate some sports during the week, so we decided to try something new! It must have been that tv show ‘Contender’ which got him thinking about Muay Thai. I’m cool with anything, so we signed up for 10 private lessons before joining the main class.

The first lesson was just an introduction to the sport; we were taught Muay Thai etiquettes such as fight manners and greeting your teachers. Then came the warm up. Skipping. OMG. The only skipping I know is the school girl skip! I felt so SILLY. Then I looked across to Wayne, and I didn’t feel so bad! HAHAHahhaha

Next were the basics. Footwork, Strait punch, Hook, body punch, roundhouse kick.

Let me give you my honest opinion: It’s not as easy as you think! There’s so much coordination, weight shift, stamina and technique involved, and I’ve got a bruised right foot to prove it.

But if you’re looking to up your endurance, strength, reflexes and arm yourself with basic self defence, give Muay Thai a go. It’s not always about sparring. Just like dancing, you don’t necessarily need a partner to dance.

I’ve never punched anyone in my life, so I was totally out of my element and felt damn “cartoon”! Let’s see how this week’s lessons go.
