What a weekend! Pain and glory all rolled into one.
My first ever mountain bike race was at Kent Ridge in 2006, I came in 2nd place.

And in 2007, it was 4th place.

Now, 2 years on, I’m back for my 3rd Kent Ridge MTB race.

Angela & Nicole before the Super D
I was a bit apprehensive about signing up for this race, ever since we came back from the U.S., we’ve only clocked in a few rides at Bukit Timah. We heard the DirTraction crew had made some amendments to the trail, so just a week before the race, we’d thought its best to familiarise ourselves with the trail.

O M G ! It was probably 3 times tougher than before, and I wasn’t sure I could even finish the race!
But for the love of the sport, I reluctantly signed up for the XC category.
DirTraction also introduced two more categories to the race this year: Super D & Short track
Super D: A super D race is best described as a timed downhill cross country race. They normally lack the technical danger packed elements of the downhill and in most cases, have some significant pedaling.
Short Track: The Short Track format is a mountain bike race similar to a criterium, riders will do multiple short laps of 700m in a short time frame of time.
So I signed myself up for Super D as well.

1st place-ers. I was rooting for William, was extremely happy to see him standing on the top podium.
How did it go? I have no idea how it happened, but I came in first in the XC Womens Open category!! Ok ok, there were only 4 girls that took part, but still, that’s one more girl than two years ago?!

All the girls had a pretty strong start, and it was clear that the Malaysian state rider would be the one to beat. She came out in front when we entered the trail, but as soon as we reached the first technical downhill, I knew where my strength lied. I managed to over take her on a rooty off camber downhill, and somehow managed to maintain that position through the two laps.

All the time in my head, I kept telling myself “Angela, you’re a shit climber, concentrate on your strengths, and bomb down the downhill and technical sections!”, and I did.
From then on, it was just me and the trail. I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t easy. Some of the climbs were 1bpm away from a heart attack, and that’s when I was off the bike pushing!!
Super D Champs
I took part in the Super D category too. It’s an open category, so us two girls (Me & Nicole) raced with the boys. Obviously no podium position, but it was the best fun all day! I loved it!

Wayne didn’t go home with a trophy, but he did win some bike goodies from the lucky draw. (check out the geek in pink laughing on the right! *guffaw

I know this post is long over due, but at least i got to it eventually.
